I am thinking about using a formula. Which product do you recommend?

Every baby is different, so what is right for one baby may not be the best option for another. We used Holle 1 with my oldest son Jack for his entire first year of life and HiPP first infant milk with my younger son William for his entire first year of life. My youngest child Evie, who is now one, also preferred HiPP first infant milk.

How many boxes of formula do I need if my LO eats X ounces of formula per day?

Below you will find approximately how many fluid ounces of formula each product will make. Please use this information to calculate your needs.

Is the formula x-rayed and/or irradiated? If so, should I be worried?

Some of our formula is x-rayed, however none of our formula is exposed to irradiation. I recommend reading this article from NPR to clients who are concerned about potential exposure.

Where can I find the instructions on how to prepare the formula?

The instructions can be found on the individual product pages. 

When will the formula expire?

Boxes expire about a year out from their ship date. Please know that the expiration dates are written as follows: dd/mm/yyyy.

How soon after I open the formula does it need to be discarded?

Holle recommends discarding the unused formula after two weeks. HiPP recommends discarding unused formula after three weeks.

Do I need to use a follow-on formula if my LO is doing well on a stage 1 product?

Not necessarily. I tried to transition both of my sons to a follow-on/stage 2 formula unsuccessfully. Stage 2 formulas do have more iron than a first infant milk, which is important because a baby’s natural iron stores begin to deplete at 6 months of age. The extra iron gave my boys tummy trouble however, and because my daughter was doing so well on HiPP stage 1 I did not even attempt to transition her to a stage 2 formula during her first year of life.

Is it really necessary to boil the water?

It is important to understand that boiling the water has nothing to do with the quality of the water you are using to make the formula. Powdered formulas are not sterile. Mixing the powder with warm water sterilizes the powder by killing any microorganisms that may exist in the formula. These microorganisms can in theory make a baby sick. Preemies and babies with compromised immune systems are most at risk. After boiling the water, allow the water to cool to approximately 122°F before mixing in the powder. It is advised that the formula is mixed within 30 minutes of boiling the water.

It is worth noting that American powdered formulas are also unsterile. If you feel overwhelmed at the prospect of boiling water every time you make a bottle, I would advise discussing this step with your pediatrician.

To avoid the sterilization process altogether, consider purchasing a ready-to-feed product.
