The Daily Six: November 8th

I am a mom who wants it all. I want my house to be beautifully decorated (so that my kids can destroy it- ha!). I want to feel good in the clothes that I wear and I want to feel good about what my kids wear to school everyday, too. I want nice makeup, though I rarely have time to put it on, and I want all of the best baby gear so that my baby will thrive.

The caveat of course is that I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg purchasing all of these things, so I love to find a good deal. I spend more time than I should hunting for sales and my inbox is overflowing with promo emails from almost every retailer you can imagine. So why not share my passion for a good deal with fellow mamas? Below you will find my top picks for today! This post contains affiliate links.

Spring Fever

Things are looking up in the A-family household. I’m getting closer to my pre-baby weight (not counting Monday mornings, of course- Hello weekend fooder*), Jack is paid-off at long last, and it’s the first official day of spring! Ice days are a thing of the past, and it’s time to leave the drab colors of winter behind.

Motivated by the changing season, I spent at least an hour last night perusing the internet- more specifically JCrew and Carters- for spring fashion inspiration, longing to drop a significant chunk of change on new clothes for both Jack and myself. Thankfully, my computer ran out of juice before I had the chance to purchase anything, as pay day is four lonnnng days away, and my funds are already whittled down to almost nil. I have online shopping baskets filled to the brim with outfits that I will probably never buy. Sigh.

I don’t know why I spend more money than is absolutely necessary on Jack’s wardrobe. The kid is eight-months old. He spends his day in a house with other children who have no concept of “cute”. On a good day, he ends up with spaghetti sauce all over his shirt (side note- He is finally eating solids. Hallelujah!). On a bad day, well, use your imagination. Despite the fact that J won’t even be able to wear these clothes in a few months, I simply cannot help myself. When I finally pick him up after an exhausting day at work, seeing my happy little nugget in an outfit that I love makes my day. And can you really put a price on that? I think not.

While browsing online last night, I made a visit to zulilly.com and stumbled upon a charming line of diaper bags and accessories. The brand is called Caught Ya Lookin’, and the bags will be on sale for two more days. This amazing find then inspired me to search for other diaper bags, not that I need another one or have anything better to do with my time… At this point, there’s not much I wouldn’t do to avoid the mound of papers I meant to grade over Spring Break. Whoops.

These are my favorite diaper bags right now. Clearly, I am a sucker for all things preppy, striped, nautical, and/or bright. I actually own the first Pottery Barn Kids diaper bag, but in a different color scheme (and sporting a lovely red wine stain- go figure). Click the bags for purchasing information. Happy Spring!

Jack’s *Themeless* Nursery

When my husband and I first found out that we were expecting, I couldn’t get my hands on a computer fast enough. I wanted to search girl’s names and boy’s names, the dos and don’ts of pregnancy, and of course, nursery decor.

Thankfully my husband and I were in agreement regarding the direction that we wanted to go with the room… Light, airy, and themeless. We didn’t want our nursery to be cheesy or feel babyish, despite the fact that the room would eventually belong to just that, a baby.

I couldn’t be happier with our decision. These are the pieces that we finally settled on for Baby J’s room.

animal1

These precious baby animal portraits are my absolute favorite part of Jack’s nursery. We have the monkey, lion, zebra, and giraffe hanging above his changing table. He loves looking at the zebra when I change his diaper… It must be those black and white stripes. These were the first pieces of art that we purchased for the nursery, as they captured the exact essence I wanted his room to exude: Simple & sweet.

earth

I am obsessed with the Global Child Collection by ChildrenInspire, an Etsy store that describes its pieces as “eco-friendly recycled collage art for children.” I originally found this set on Zulily, the daily deal site for moms, babies, and kids. The center piece touts a message that I want to engrain in all of my children, “Compassion for the Earth and All Who Inhabit It.” The set also features numbers one through ten and the alphabet. What’s even better is that you have the option to purchase these pieces in a multitude of languages. We chose Italian, as that is my husband’s heritage.

roots

compassion

These pieces are also from the Global Child Collection by ChildrenInspire. I chose the second map that reiterates the message of compassion (though in English this time), but I also equally love the other map that reads “My Roots Lie Here.” You can customize the map to your own heritage using little heart stickers to locate and highlight a child’s roots. A teaching moment that will last throughout the years… Love it!

loveyou

This is another piece that I adore for two reasons. First of all, this canvas features an iconic Austin image that is painted onto the side of a restaurant on South Congress Avenue. Everyone flocks to this site to take pictures with loved ones in front of the painted wall. As you can imagine, it is uber-popular for engagement pictures. South Congress (SoCo) is a funky strip of shops and restaurants that are just about as “Austiny” as it gets. I was born and raised in Austin, so incorporating local artwork into J’s nursery was important to me. Secondly, I love the message. That’s a given. We have this piece hanging above Jack’s crib.

Jack-20

My sweet baby boy. God I love this picture. J is less than a week old here, and although he is way bigger now, he still has those perfectly pursed lips. The colors in his hat blend seamlessly with the rest of the artwork we have in his room.

All of the furniture in Jack’s room is white, but we made to sure to include plenty of color throughout the rest of the nursery to prevent a sterile, hospital-like feel.

crib

At $150, this Graco crib was a steal.

im-just-a-toy-box-whiteshelves-and-wall-hooks

We purchased this toy box and three white book ledges from Land of Nod, which we were able to purchase with leftover Crate & Barrel gift cards from our wedding. Score!

magic-carpet-non-flying-edition-aqua

This aqua-colored rug was also purchased from Land of Nod with a Crate & Barrel gift card.

bedding

This is J’s Bedding Set from Pottery Barn Kids. We followed the AAP’s recommendation and opted out of a bumper.

B and I saved big bucks on the dresser and rocker/glider by buying used. Actually, the dresser was free, as it previously belonged to my uncle. He was going to sell it at a garage sale, but we convinced him to give it to us instead. After painting it white and replacing the pulls, the dresser looks like it is straight out of a Pottery Barn catalogue.

I found the rocker/glider on craigslist. The chair looks almost new and is super comfortable… Plus it cost us next to nothing. We went back and forth on new vs used, and at the end of the day I am happy with our decision. Baby J has certainly worn the chair in, and endless spit-up episodes might sting a little more had we shelled out a thousand bucks on the chair. Of course I am not ruling out an upgrade for baby #2. Sorry Jack!

Putting together a nursery is a long, expensive, and mostly enjoyable process. Thank goodness we had nine long months to find all of the right pieces to complete our vision, and nine long months to pay for it all!

First Month Wardrobe Necessities

When I was pregnant with my son, I relied heavily on my sister’s guidance in the motherhood department. She has three kids under the age of five, and her experience proved invaluable to me.

You see, I was that girl who would turn down holding babies when my proud friends invited me to the hospital to see the newest addition to their family.

My mom holding my nephew Blaine. Notice who is not holding the baby?

It wasn’t anything personal… I mean, I’m no baby hater! It was more like fear of the unknown. What if I hurt the baby? What will I do if it cries? And worst of all, what if my baby-loving friends write me off as a mommy failure before I even have the chance to prove them wrong?

Held this little guy long enough to take a picture. Immediately returned him to his mama.

This is going to sound horrible, but I did not change a single one of Baby J’s diapers until we arrived home from the hospital. It’s not that I didn’t want to, I just really had no idea what the hell I was doing. I had maybe changed three diapers throughout the course of my entire life prior to having a baby, and none of them were particularly messy, if you know what I mean. The nurses would come in to wheel J away to the nursery (which does not make one a bad mommy, might I add), and I would assure them that his diaper was clean and dry. The reality was I hadn’t even thought to check. Thank God for my husband, who despite his complete cluelessness in the baby department, managed to pull his s**t together when I couldn’t. He swaddled, he burped, he soothed, and I cried.

I cried because I was exhausted. I cried because I was terrified. And I cried because that’s simply what you do when you’ve just had a baby… I would have been lost without him.

First date night post-baby. A much needed night away.

Thanks to my knowledgeable sister and her savvy advice, I was able to get one thing right in the first few weeks of motherhood, and it’s pretty darn important if you ask me.

Newborn wardrobe… Nailed it.

And in the spirit of celebrating the small victories of motherhood, I thought I would share my list of clothing necessities for a newborn baby. It’s easy to get carried away because baby clothes are so stinking adorable, but remember, there is plenty of time to shop after they are born.

J was just over six pounds when he was born, and contrary to what my mother insisted, he wore newborn-sized clothing for a very long time. Of course every baby is different, but this is what worked for us.

onesies10-12 bodysuits (onesies

Can one really have too many onesies?

pants

4-6 pairs of cotton pants

The infamous “old man” pants. God I love them. Baby girls have it slightly better with cute colors and a girlpantsruffled ankle.

sleepnplay

3-4 sleep & plays

Do yourself (and your baby) a favor… Buy the zip-up version. Snaps at three a.m. are never a good idea.

2-3 “other” sleep outfits

Gowns, and sacks, and swaddles! Oh, my! It’s hard to predict what your baby will prefer to sleep in, so it is wise to have an assortment of options. We tried all, and the onesie/Woombie combo was a winner for us.

swaddlesleepsackgown

3-4 pair of socks

Finding a pair of socks that will stay on your little ones’ feet can prove rather challenging, even more so when they are five months old and sucking on their toes. The only pair of socks that I have had any success with is this pair from Carter’s. Yes, paying fourteen dollars for three pairs of socks seems excessive, but it sure beats the “one sock” syndrome that will otherwise plague your baby. I welcome any less expensive suggestions that have worked for you!socks2

Depending on the weather, you may need other accessories to keep your baby warm. My son was born in July, so this list met all of our needs. And of course I bought a few over the top designer outfits that Baby J never had the opportunity to wear, and you should, too. They are babies only once, after all.

A Few of Our *Least* Favorite Things

As a follow up to our previous post, we thought it would be helpful to highlight some of our least favorites products of 2013, as well. We hate to be Negative Nellys, and we’re certain that there are plenty of people out there that absolutely love these things… Just not us.

Our *Least* Favorite Baby Gear of 2013

mamaroo1. mamaROO– Aside from the aesthetics, which are totally not my style (hello Startrek!), I really wanted to like this one. Thankfully, I did not shell out $200 only to learn that my little booger did not in fact want to take a ride in the Cadillac of infant seats. I borrowed it from a friend, whose son coincidentally hated the Roo, as well.

Learn more here.     $200

babybath2. Blooming Bath for Babies- So dang adorable, but not a practical option for me. Unfortunately, this flowery bath did not fit very well into our kitchen sink. Baby J was forced to sit completely upright, which not only made for a difficult bathing experience, but a pretty pissed off baby, too. Needless to say, my husband, Baby J, and myself were all scarred by the experience. No joke, we did not bathe him for 2+ weeks following that experience.

Buy the bath here, or contact me and I’ll sell you mine for half-price!     $40

ktan3. Baby K’Tan– I just know that the Baby K’Tan is a great product, and I sincerely hope that Baby #2 loves it, because he/she may not have much of a choice! Baby J despises infant carriers however, and trying to manipulate the K’Tan into place with a screaming baby just didn’t work for me. The B’jorn was also a no-go, but I can occasionally use the Ergo at the grocery store without someone calling CPS.

Check out the K’tan here.     $50

nosefrida4. Nosefrida- In addition to the ick-factor, this thing just can’t compete with the good ‘ole fashion blue bulb snot sucker that our moms used on us. No matter how hard I suck, I just can’t get the boogers out with the Frida.

See what all of the hype is about here. I’d offer you mine, but that’s just kind of gross.    $15

book5. Moms on Call Basic Baby Care: 0-6 Months– I read this book cover to cover leading up to the birth of sweet Baby J. I memorized the schedules and prepped my hubby on how our days with a newborn would play out. I just knew that things would fall right into place as the book suggests. WRONG! Trying to get an infant on a schedule is just flat out ridiculous, and it took two long months, a ton of tears, and a “Come to Jesus” talk with my husband to realize that I had lost my mind somewhere along the way.

*Do yourself a favor, and do not buy this book.*
